In a significant step towards strengthening the energy infrastructure in the mining sector, the Collahuasi Mining Company (CMDIC) has awarded Esinel Ingenieros (ESINEL) the contract to carry out the expansion of the 220 kV transmission electrical system at the pumping station of its desalination plants.

The project, known as the “Expansion of the 220 kV Electrical Transmission System at Collahuasi,” will be executed in two phases: FEED Engineering Phase 2 (Stage 1) and FEED Engineering Phase 3 (Stage 2).

The primary objective of this project is to supply electrical power to the new Seawater Desalination Water Pumping System, currently under development, which is essential to ensure the supply of fresh water to the CMDIC Concentrator Plant.

The scope of the project includes the construction of transformation substations, new 220 kV transmission lines to power the pumping stations of the projected water pumping system, as well as the refurbishment of the 2×220 kV “Lagunas – Collahuasi” line and its sectioning to originate the Pampa del Tamarugal Switching Substation.

This initiative is part of the broader project called the “Complementary Water Source (CWS),” through which CMDIC seeks to ensure the supply of desalinated seawater for its processes, in response to the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability.

The “Infrastructure Development and Production Capacity Improvement” project aims to ensure the operational continuity of CMDIC and establish conditions to increase its mineral processing capacity over the next 20 years.

This expansion, which includes the implementation of a seawater desalination plant, represents a significant milestone in the company’s strategy to reduce the consumption of continental water resources and mitigate its environmental impact.
