ESINEL Engineers Awarded Engineering and Civil Design for Segment No. 3 of CONEXION’s HVDC Continuous Current Line

Mayo, 2023: Civil Design for Segment N°3 HVDC Line – Conexión Energía

ESINEL has been selected to lead the engineering and civil design of Segment No. 3 of CONEXION’s High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) line, a large-scale project that promises to strengthen the country’s electrical infrastructure.

Led by Conexión Kimal Lo Aguirre S.A., the initiative resulted from an international public tender awarded through a consortium consisting of Transelec S.A., ISA Inversiones Chile S.A., and China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI). This project, known as the “Kimal – Lo Aguirre HVDC Line” (LTE HVDC), aims to construct a ±600 kV HVDC electric transmission line extending approximately 1,342 km from the Antofagasta Region to the Metropolitan Region.

Segment No. 3, the focus of ESINEL’s work, spans a projected length of about 193 km and extends from the northeast of the Diego de Almagro commune to the Hornitos – Quebrada Los Loros area (southeast of Copiapó) in the Atacama Region.

The implementation of High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology in this project represents a significant advancement in electric power transmission in Chile. While relatively new in the country, HVDC technology has been widely used in various parts of the world, including Brazil, the United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden, and China, due to its ability to efficiently and reliably transmit large amounts of energy over long distances.

This specific segment of the transmission line will traverse several communes, from María Elena to Pudahuel, and will play a fundamental role in expanding and strengthening the National Electric System (SEN), contributing to ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply nationwide.
